1) Disregard anything Dennis says. None of what he says is relevant. Never even used a phone, much less a current generation smart phone. I mean, do you *really* care if it's open source?
2) I dislike Android, and I really do want to like it. It feels messy to me. The UI isn't quite as polished. There's tons of stutter during various transitions and tweens.
3) iPhone browser is better.
4) I hate iTunes. Big reason NOT to use iPhone. If you like iTunes - get an iPhone.
5) Apple has a better track record of supporting their phones. Samsung is notorious for forgetting all about the previous models once they release a new phone.

Apart from that - it's all personal preference. They're both great phones.

I have had Samasung's Galaxy tablet 8.9, and SII (aptly named Calliope and Hermes) for a few days now. Got deals through my old vendors.

Apple people keep harassing me saying their iPad2 and iPhone 4S are better.

I've read reviews, and they seem on par. From personal experience, Apple products seem more easy to use.

The flash support was my big one up until adobe announced they were finally killing it for html5. Even though this is the case, flash support is still really valuable to internetters like me who watch shit like zero punctuation.

So what I've been saying is what makes my phone and tablet better is that it's the most ideologically pleasing platform. Fuck proprietary bull shit.

In the end, I just like swype.

(Flash is bad. It is ruining the internet -- by making it unparseable (Flash webpages = vomit), and splitting it into company-factions (you need to install a specific retarded company's crap to have the privilege of viewing it). The whole point of the internet was to spread information, via open standards.) I happily ignore Macromedia-monkeys, with pretty much no inconvenience. That little company/group will disappear soon enough. Perhaps you can tell the "zero punctuation et al" people to use open software, at the very least to offer an output option in an open standard. Unless they only want to broadcast to the depressing gated Flash corner of the internet.)

You are aware that governments/companies have placed backdoors in many products (Skype, website certificates, etc), and will continue to do so?

And, I guess you don't really want full control of the machine -- you just want to do a few basic tasks that the company allows you to? That's your choice. Personally, I like complete control of the machine. I don't want to have to stress about the company ever disappearing or deciding to abandon it, as you claim Samsung is notorious for doing.

But, I guess these issues are completely irrelevant, right??

And hardware/software aside, the most important thing of all is internet access -- how much for how many gigs a month?

>ou are aware that governments/companies have placed backdoors in many products (Skype, website certificates, etc), and will continue to do so?

So? What are you going to do about it? You know that, for example, DoD won't buy laptops or computers that are made by Chinese companies (e.g. Lenovo). You know why? Because there most likely is a hardware backdoor. Whatever operating system you put on there (open source or otherwise), is irrelevant.

Your computer may have backdoors you aren't aware of. You going to stop using computers?

>how much for how many gigs a month?"

I would venture to guess a full plan (phone, sms, data) would run you anywhere from $60-80 / month (I guess 5-10gig transfer limit).

Is it worth it? Is 5 gigs enough? Well, it's enough for browsing, and email. Not enough for constant youtube use. But it's not really a choice between this and something better (and cheaper). It's a choice between 5 gigs and 0 gigs. I choose the former.

Given that you've never used a smart-phone and don't even know what the current generation offers, you have no credibility in giving advice.

That's retarded -- like arguing that you shouldn't bother locking your doors, because theives can easily use a battering-ram to enter anyways. The point is, you want things to be open. I have never heard of a single backdoor in Free Software. I have heard of *many* in closed-source crap. Who needs sophisticated hardware bugs, when people like you will gladly volunteer to install bugged software. Worry about those "transitions and tween"! -- forget openness and control.

(Who the fuck still uses "phone" and "sms"? Or, rather, who the fuck would still use it if they have internet access? So, $60 for 5gig -- meh, I'll pass.)

My criteria:
  * Open source software. (I bet they both fail here, and am too pessimistic and jaded to google my prediction.)
  * Sane internet data plan, with sane transfer limits. (Last time I checked, this doesn't exist in North America.)
  * Long battery life.

Android is fully open source.

I assume the Samsung runs Android? In that case, Samsung it probably is, at least hardware-wise. Now if only we had sane wifi service, I might actually get one.
