1) No, the ages are not fractional.
2) Yes, I did not tell you the number of trees.
The only clarification I can think of is that at the end Adam should have said "my oldest /kid/" rather than "my oldest /son/". Even then, that part of the hint might still be confusing and/or misleading.
There's something about the second hint that you missed.

Trees can grow in gardens. I hope it's not that. Moreover, the fact that he is able to actually count implies that they do exist.

There are no limitations for the number of trees. I could have been a park.
Keep in mind that although /we/ don't know the number of trees, Adam and Bob /do/ know.
