Slight Changes
posted by Driusan on August 10th, 2008 at 3:33PM

Since people seem to post in spurts, the "Recent Comments" became pretty useless. Two people going at it while you're not around means that you only see the most recent 10 when you do log in, and tend to miss anything else that was posted recently in a different story. At least in my experience..

So I've replaced the "Recent Comments" box with a "New, Unread Content" box. It'll include links to everything you've never read on the site, since the beginning of time (limited to 20 links to preserve page space.) If you notice there's a lot, you might want to start at the bottom. Reading the parent in a thread marks the entire thread as read (and always has.)

The new, unread content box includes both wiki pages and comments, instead of just comments.

At the same time, I changed the "Recent Wiki Changes" page to "Unread, Modified Content" to go with it. Similar reasoning/caveats.

If you notice that there's a lot of unread, modified content and you just want it all marked as read, let me know and I'll fix it for you as a one-off thing. I can't do the same for new content easily, so you'll have to either deal or catch up.

As Carolyn noticed, the headings also changed. Dennis made some changes in SVN that fucked them up while he was, apparently, trying to change the site to a retro 3 column layout that would make the year 2003 proud. So I fixed the CSS make the headings slightly less hideous, but kept the 3 column layout because it does seem a little nicer.

xoxo,
The Management.

[UPDATE] There is now also a horribly hack-ish emailed notifications of new content, designed by dennis. You need to enable it in the user preferences if you want more spam in your inbox.

Anyone want to see how horribly broken the site is in IE7 under Vista? :)

Fortunately, I don't think anyone here uses IE.   I think.   I could be wrong.

It should only show the last month or so of unread content. The rest can be read manually by reading through the stories. There's no need to show more.

I disagree.

I sometimes miss a couple of weeks of stuff entirely because of work or whatever.   I like having it all there.

I got to see stuff that I NEVER would have gone back to look at - which was awesome.

posted by dennisn on August 10th, 2008 at 9:29PM

You can still go back to look at those things. Maybe we should even find a better way to revive old content ... like a "Historical-story/comment-Of-The-Day" box. But that box was /supposed/ to be for "New" content.

It's not really that much of a problem for me -- I've already read pretty much everything -- but for newer accounts, I think it's annoying.

30 days might be a little short -- 60-90 might be better -- but having links to year-old posts is pretty useless.

I still want recent comments in addition to unread stuff.   Can I get that?

I had 57 unread modified items. =)

I wish I had waited until I read your summer of changes before I sat and opened each and every unread modified item to make it get off the list.   =(

How about: if there's no unread stuff, it'll show you recent stuff, otherwise just unread stuff? Same for modified. It wouldn't be too difficult to do that, but I'm not sure how to do it otherwise without cluttering things up with 4 boxes on the side..

posted by dennisn on August 10th, 2008 at 10:39PM

For many people, they'll never have an empty unread items list. But, when you think about it, the only purpose that the Recent Comments served was to show you what you haven't read yet. So I actually prefer the current unread-only list -- but shorter!

I have an unread items list, and I like Recent Comments because it helped me remember what the most recent topic of discussion was for everyone.
