Digital SLRs are more than just high-resolution digital cameras. They have better image processors, they let you take pictures faster, and more control over things like focus and aperture. You can really take pictures with a dSLR that you can't with a normal camera.

Having said that, you need to know how to use the settings to use a dSLR effectively. If you intend on leaving it on the "auto" setting, you might as well get a good point-and-shoot digital camera for a couple hundred dollars. And you'll get tired of carrying a huge camera and lens around to every place where you want to take a picture. If you don't intend on using it on a regular basis, it's just not worth the money and time investment.
