They're not my laws. I didn't make them. I didn't agree to them. They don't apply to me, especially since i see them as unjust and doomed to fail.

So ... you're saying it's alright to ignore every law that you don't agree with? Well, I don't agree with income taxes, or tuition fees. Does that mean I don't have to pay them?

The music industry has simply failed to keep up with the times. [snip] I also hinted at alternative payment models above.

First of all, you didn't "hint at alternative payment models" in your comment. You stated something along the lines of "everyone's life essentials taken care of, they no longer need to be paid", which seems to be your solution to pretty much anything.

Second of all, I don't think it's possible for the music industry to "keep up with the times". I mean, unless the whole "$1 for a song download" thing takes off, the one thing that the online distribution model does is take the music companies right out of the loop. For a relatively low cost (relative being less than it takes to manufacture and distribute thousands of CDs) individual artists can publish and distribute their own music. The one thing they can't do is become the divas and superstars that they are today, but then again that might not be a bad thing. :)

The bottom line is, their music is a product and you should pay for them. I've downloaded my share of music, so I'm not innocent by all means, but I've bought a few CDs as well (all of them Chinese). What the music industry should stop doing is shooting themselves in the foot by suing the same people who buy their product. Someone should tell them that they're creating a PR nightmare for themselves, and that their actions are creating a generation of people who will loathe the industry, and when that happens they'll be worse off than before. If they simply take the effort from these lawsuits and apply them to make their products more appealing to consumers (as they should be, being a business and all), then everyone will be better off.
