Top 250
posted by dennisn on August 11th, 2008 at 12:34PM

So, in a futile attempt to understand human culture through the medium of moving pictures, we have the statistically infallible [[ImdbTop250]] list (hosted locally) to watch. We'll start from the top.

We've all pretty much seen 1-4. I just got 5, "The Good, The Bad, and the ugly" -- and it appears to be in english, even though IMDB claims it to be italian.

So, when?

Sounds awesome! Would you guys be up for watching it in the evening of my barbeque on Sunday, August 24?

Affirmative.

The IMDB isn't "statistically infallable," unless by "statistically infallable" you mean "highly biased."

It:
1. Excludes movies that don't have "enough" ratings and
2. Excludes votes from people who aren't "regular" voters.

That said, I've only seen 1 of the "top 5" and don't care enough to go out of my way to see the others.. but I'll watch:
a) any that are non-English or Canadian (oh, wait, there are none due to the exclusions above, weighting of ratings, and possibily other, undocumented restrictions.)
and
b) Dr. Strangelove

The minimum number of votes to be included (currently 1300) is pretty reasonable. I'm not sure what "non-regular" voters means -- but I'm sure it's also a reasonable critereon -- maybe it's people who only vote 0's and 10's, or who consistently vote completely off the bell curve and thus exhibit monkey behaviour?

I have Strangelove -- haven't you already seen it?

Worst to best?

I feel like we should be building up to the best.

Lots of the bottom ones are absolute crap. I think we'll end up stopping before the top-100.

I wasn't thinking of starting from the top 100.   I was thinking that we'd start at the top 25?   20?   15? 10?

yes, it builds the anticipation

I've seen 5.

So, whenever happens to be convenient is good.

There's no need to be forced to re-watch these things. I certainly wouldn't want to be forced to re-watch Dark Knight :\.

I'm not being forced.   I would like to.   The last time I watched that movie was probably YEARS ago because of my parents.
