You don't need a case -- just have everything sprawled in the open -- it'll save you a hundred or so, and provide the best airflow.
So, you'll need:
motherboard... 80
cpu.... 80
ram... 30
gpu... 100
nic... 20
kbd/mouse... 20
monitor... 200
= ~ 500 ... based on a quick reference by canadacomputers.com

mother- 100 or so if i'm happy with 667mhz
ram- 30
nic - built in
mouse/kbd - have
gpu- EVGA e-GeForce 8600GT SSC 256MB but looking for better - 130
monitor - used crt? 50
hd - 100
PS if not a case - 40
So 590 without the taxes.

You don't really need that fast of a cpu ... I remember my sister playing sof2 very well with a p3-400mhz!! -- it's all about the gpu
Also, you don't really need that big an hd -- so you can cut that estimate in half. If you want to storage, get a separate raided unit later on. For daily use, 60g is plenty (and that's only if you have 40g worth of songs).

I use to play.posted by pasofol on April 22nd, 2008 at 10:48AM
Sof2 on a 333mhz celeron and 16meg vcard vodoo3 baby. But if I'm buying a new system I'd play some new games not just open source ones. So the extra cpu and a good vcard will be needed.
